Training Recap: April 22
Written by supahrevs on April 22, 2009 – 2:42 pm -Although it’s currently pouring in Foxborough (and it would appear across a large chunk of the East Coast), the rain held off for training this morning and the players were able to get in about a 90-minute session under ideal conditions.
With the team heading to Salt Lake tomorrow to get acclimated to the altitude and the brand new facilities at Rio Tinto Stadium ahead of Saturday night’s match, today’s session was the last in Foxborough before heading west.
There was plenty of reason for optimism around Revolution camp today, beginning with the news that defender Chris Albright underwent successful surgery on the lateral meniscus in his left knee this morning. The initial timetable for Albright’s recovery is 6-8 weeks while rehabilitating his knee, with full details available in the official release here.
In another bit of promising news on the injury front, Taylor Twellman increased his participation in training today, as he took part in both the possession game and about 15 minutes of a small-sided scrimmage after previously being limited primarily to running and passing drills. Twellman wore the green jersey during the games - designating him as a neutral and preventing him from excessive contact - but it is certainly a step in the right direction as far as getting the club’s all-time leading scorer back onto the field. The only problem today’s session posed for Twellman was his inability to shoot during the scrimmage, as neutral players are not allowed to score. Needless to say, it went highly against Twellman’s killer instinct to pass the ball off while having open looks at goal.
As for some of the other injured players, both Kevin Alston and Mauricio Castro were spotted jogging at training as they aim to fully recover from hamstring injuries, while Matt Reis once again participated in the full session as he hopes to make his return from a right knee injury.
After the physically strenuous parts of today’s session ended, the coaching staff used the final 15 minutes to run through strategy and positioning. With just one more session scheduled for Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City prior to Saturday night’s match, it’s crucial that everyone is on the same page.
And what’s a training session without a bit of fun at the end? Before they headed inside, assistant coach Paul Mariner and a few of the players - including Shalrie Joseph and Jeff Larentowicz - tried their hand at curling the ball into the net on a drop-kick from well behind the goal-line. Perhaps surprising many - but certainly not himself - Mariner was the only one who successfully accomplished the feat.
