Training Recap - June 10
Written by supahrevs on June 10, 2009 – 3:58 pm -After yesterday’s session included only those players who didn’t start on Sunday night against New York, the full squad returned to action today as the players gear up for Saturday night’s road match against the Kansas City Wizards (8:30 p.m. ET, TV38, WEEI Radio Network).
However, before we get into today’s training recap, we want to address the rumors circulating about the status of Taylor Twellman …
We want to reiterate the fact that the doctors have not placed a timetable on Twellman’s injury, contrary to reports stating otherwise. Because of the nature of the injury (neck/head), the stance is understandably cautious, but Twellman continues to train and play on a day-to-day basis dependent on how he feels. This is no different than what Twellman has stated publicly leading up to the two games in which he’s played, while it’s also what he said postgame after the New York match.
So, what that basically means is that there’s been no change in Twellman’s status - it’s the same today as it was yesterday, last week, etc.
With that said, Twellman was at the stadium today to receive treatment but he did not train … after training yesterday when much of the team was off, today was a day in which he needed that recovery period.
As for the rest of today’s session, the rain luckily held off and the players got in almost a full two hours of work. After breaking up into three teams, the players went through the normal rotation of two teams playing a small-sided game and the third team working on fitness. When that part of the session was complete, a large chunk of the players worked with head coach Steve Nicol on tactics and possession, while the rest worked on some new finishing drills. To end the session, the entire team got together for crossing and finishing.
Spirits were high today following back-to-back wins, as a few of the players actually stuck around to play soccer horeshoes - an activity that hasn’t been too prevalent this season after it was seen almost daily at training last year. Hopefully spirits will continue to be high with a positive result in Kansas City this upcoming weekend …
After training, we were able to catch up with Matt Reis and Jay Heaps to get their thoughts about Saturday night’s visit to Kansas City, so be sure to check back for that footage tomorrow.
