Injury Report - July 7

injury_reportThe Revolution’s current injury situation came to a head on Saturday night in Los Angeles when right midfielder Wells Thompson was forced to take the field at left back for lack of further options, as the injury-riddled Revs were only able to suit up 17 players, including three goalkeepers.

There’s quite a bit of movement on today’s injury report, with a few positive changes to speak of and also a couple of non-major additions. All in all, it would have to be said that there are more positives than negatives to take away from today’s injury list.

Here is the official New England Revolution injury report for Tuesday, July 7:

PROBABLE: Bobby Shuttleworth (R hip flexor strain)

QUESTIONABLE: Steve Ralston (R hamstring strain)

DOUBTFUL: Chris Tierney (L MCL strain)

OUT: Chris Albright (L lateral meniscus tear), Mauricio Castro (L hamstring strain), Shalrie Joseph (R knee cartilage defect/bone bruising), Taylor Twellman (Disabled List: concussion)

Both Kevin Alston (R hamstring tightness) and Gabriel Badilla (bulging disk) have come off the list completely after being listed as “Probable” on Friday. Alston started and played the full 90 minutes in the Revolution’s 1-0 loss to the Galaxy, further underlying the fact that he is fully healthy, while Badilla traveled to the West Coast and was available on the bench. For Badilla, the move is significant, as he had been on every injury list from the beginning of the season until today.

Added to the list are Chris Tierney (L MCL strain, “Doubtful”) and Bobby Shuttleworth (R hip flexor strain, “Probable”). Tierney traveled to LA but suffered his knee injury while training on the practice fields at The Home Depot Center the day before the game, and he was not outside for today’s training session. Shuttleworth is dealing with a mild hip flexor strain but was at training today and participated fully.

Making the jump from “Doubtful” to “Questionable” is Steve Ralston, who is recovering from a right hamstring strain. The club captain took full part in today’s training session, playing possession and working on finishing with the rest of the players who were present. Considering the slick conditions in the pouring rain, the fact that Ralston felt comfortable enough to test his hamstring with some sharp turns and lunges is a good sign.

Also at today’s training session was Chris Albright, who remains “Out” with bone bruising in his left knee after surgery on the lateral meniscus. The veteran defender was wearing training gear and sneakers and did a bit of jogging before watching the rest of the session from the sidelines.

Mauricio Castro (L hamstring strain), who has been participating in outdoor drills recently, was not at today’s session, nor were Shalrie Joseph (R knee bone bruising) and Taylor Twellman (Disabled List: concussion), who are both continuing their recovery away from the field.

While today’s session was reserved only for those healthy players who didn’t start on Saturday night against LA, the entire team will be back in for tomorrow’s session.

I have to say I agree, the young guys are stepping up. We have 7 of our next 9 league games at home so if we can make a good young the experience the younger guys are getting now will be valuable come playoff time!

How serious is Joseph’s injury? How much longer is he likely to be out for?
