Injury Report - July 21

Written by supahrevs on July 21, 2009 – 3:02 pm -

injury_reportFor the first time since the SuperLiga 2009 opener on June 21, the Revolution was able to dress a full complement of 18 players for Sunday night’s 2-0 victory over Chivas USA. As awful as it sounds, it was almost a milestone that the club was able to fill 18 jerseys with healthy bodies, but it’s a very clear reminder of how dreadful the injury situation has been this season.

With that said, there are still 10 players on today’s injury list, but it’s not nearly as bad as it sounds. Four of those players are listed as “Probable,” while another three are “Questionable,” leaving only three players below the 50-50 line.

Here is the New England Revolution’s official injury report for Tuesday, July 21:

PROBABLE: Kevin Alston (R hamstring strain), Shalrie Joseph (R knee cartilage defect/bone bruising), Sainey Nyassi (L hamstring strain), Emmanuel Osei (L hamstring strain)

QUESTIONABLE: Mauricio Castro (L hamstring strain), Amaechi Igwe (L hamstring strain), Mike Videira (R quad strain)

OUT: Chris Albright (L lateral meniscus tear), Edgaras Jankauskas (R hamstring strain), Taylor Twellman (Disabled List: concussion)

Just two moves on today’s injury report, beginning with the upgrade of Shalrie Joseph from “Questionable” to “Probable” with bone bruising in his right knee. Joseph played 45 minutes against Chivas USA on Sunday, instantly changing the flow of the game upon his entrance at halftime and contributing to both Revs’ goals in the 2-0 win. With another week of training and rest ahead of this weekend’s trip to Houston, perhaps Joseph will be ready for even more time against the Dynamo.

The only addition to today’s report is Emmanuel Osei, who is listed as “Probable” with a left hamstring strain. Although today’s training session was reserved only for those players who didn’t start against Chivas USA, Osei was on hand doing a bit of stretching and jogging.

Also listed as “Probable” are Kevin Alston and Sainey Nyassi, who are both dealing with mild hamstring strains. Alston played the full 90 minutes against Chivas USA on Sunday night and stayed on the field despite picking up a knock late in the game, while Nyassi was removed in the 51st minute. Nyassi was at today’s training session doing some stretching and passing.

Mauricio Castro (L hamstring strain), Amaechi Igwe (L hamstring strain) and Mike Videira (R quad strain) are all listed as “Questionable,” but all three were at today’s training session participating in some form or another. Igwe (who entered the Chivas USA match as a late substitute) and Castro (who dressed for the Chivas USA match for the first time this season) were both involved in the full session, while Videira worked off to the side with the athletic training staff and passed back and forth with Nyassi.

Chris Albright (L lateral meniscus tear), Edgaras Jankauskas (R hamstring strain) and Taylor Twellman (Disabled List: concussion) are the three Revs still listed as “Out”, and all three continue to receive treatment and recover away from the training field.

Is Janny’s hammy a significant tear that will keep him out for awhile or a mild one that should get him back in a week or so?

    Any updates on Twellman?

    George,

From what we understand, Jankauskas’ hamstring strain was actually suffered while getting hit in the back of the leg during the Chicago game, as opposed to the typical strain which comes from overexertion of the muscle. Because of the unique nature of the injury it’s tough to tell how long it’ll keep him out, but it’s not a tear.

As for Twellman, he’s still under doctor’s orders to limit his activities as part of his recovery. There haven’t been any setbacks, but it’s just one of those injuries where time and precaution will need to be taken.

Do we know when Twellman will be back? I have tickets to see the revs in California and will be disappointed if he is not there. The game is on September 13th.

“…being listed on the New England roster this year.”

I did see the hit that cause Janny’s injury and at the time thought it more likely to have caused knee ligament/tendon damage. I was actually relieved to hear it was a muscle injury. My professional experience (as a physician) with a “Blow” type leg muscle injury is they heal much faster than tears. Sure hope he gets better soon. We need him big time.

How can Twellman still be out with a concussion? I had five concussions playing soccer, one where I was completely knocked out as goalie and was back on my feet and playing the remainder of the season after 2 days. The other caused vomiting, numbness in my hands and slurred speech but still recovered in 24-36 hours. Then he comes into a game scores two great goals (and one with his head!!!!) and is back out again? I can’t imagine we are getting the entire story.
