Training Recap - August 27

You may have noticed we stress the weather a lot at the start of every training recap. Maybe some it has to do with the fact that, like most people with an office job, we’re inside much of the day (windowless) and see our daily treks to training as nice escapes. But on a day like today, when the weather is absolutely perfect, we just like to spread the good news, especially after both the awful rain from earlier this summer or the recent run of hot, sticky and humid stuff.

And, with the impending arrival of Tropical Storm (maybe soon-to-be Hurricane) Danny, weather could actually play a role in Saturday’s game. So that’s another reason we’re bringing it up. As perfect as today is, Saturday could - could - be a bit different for the lads out on the field.

Now on the actual training session …

Today’s session ran about an hour and 20 minutes or so. As with every session, the guys got a good jog and stretch in at the start, and then moved to a series of passing drills while the keepers worked at the far end of the field. Their drills focused on agility, distractions and impediments in the box today.

After the early drills, the team broke into three teams, with two working on possession on an approximately 30×30 yard field, while the third group rotated into shooting drills at the other end against the goalkeepers.

Once everyone had rotated through everywhere, the session officially ended with crossing and finishing. Unofficially, however, there were simoultaneous games of soccer horseshoes going on (Nicol/Mariner vs. Heaps/Knighton and Tierney/Videria vs. Phelan/Thompson - who trumpeted their “convincing” two games to nil win over the former Nolbes pair), while pretty much everyone else played quite possibly the largest game of Butts Up yet this year. (Shalrie Joseph and guest player Sheanon Williams were the first two victims, while Darrius Barnes and Kevin Alston were the second pair of unfortunate losers.)

So, what happens if Danny hits hurricane status and hits New England? Is there a set criteria to not play? I remember that infamous San Jose game a few years ago: we waited in the old, leaky Foxboro stadium trying to outwait lightning and torrential rain, which didn’t let up. I know Danny might not be that bad, but I’m curious.
