Revolution Newsstand - October 23

Revolution NewsstandThe decisive final weekend of regular-season action that we’ve all been anticipating was kicked off with an enticing appetizer last night, as the Chicago Fire clinched a berth in the postseason with a 1-0 win over Chivas USA. More importantly to the Revolution, this now means that the Revs can’t finish in any kind of tiebreaker with the Fire (which is a positive because they wouldn’t have won in ANY tiebreaking scenario which involved Chicago), and the Crew has clinched the Supporters’ Shield ahead of Sunday night’s game. Whether the latter has any effect on the Revs-Crew match remains to be seen.

In Revs news, Kyle McCarthy writes about the Revolution’s temporary assistant coach, Mark Watson, for a piece on MLSnet.com. Watson is in for the remainder of the season to help out Steve Nicol and Gwynne Williams, while a full search for a new assistant will take place in the offseason.

Finally, McCarthy has his last Friday MLS Forecast of the 2009 regular season - let’s hope for the Revolution’s sake that his predictions for this weekend are incorrect.

Hopefully Columbus will field a weakened side to rest their starters for games that matter. And just a search for an assistant replacement? Why don’t we replace the whole coaching staff - they’ve had enough time and achieved little to nothing. Replace half the squad while you’re at it… This is the first year iv actually considered not renewing my season tickets - if the FO, coaching staff and players (some excluded of course) aren’t trying - why should I?

Hey Craig why don’t we go back to the good old days of not making the playoffs at all. Remember the good old days of Stapleton, Rongen,Zenga, who by the way now coaches Palermo in Serie A, and Calvijo. At least Nicol got the Revs there four times. Back in 1996 we would of have been happy to just get there once.

  3. Cooper Says:

Nicol is not the problem. I challenge anyone other than maybe the Special One to get more out of this lot this season than what Stevie’s got.

  4. Jeff Says:

look at the players that have been on the injury report this year. given the fact that this team is a draw away from the playoffs, i’d sat SN should be a candidate for coach of the year. getting rid of him is nuts.
