League awards finalists announced
Written by revseye on November 3, 2009 – 12:51 pm -Earlier this afternoon, MLS announced the finalists for its 2009 season-ending awards. Included among the honorees were two Revs - Shalrie Joseph with a much-deserved nod as a finalist for Most Valuable Player. Steve Ralston was also recognized as a finalist for the Fair Play Award. Not listed? Kevin Alston or Darrius Barnes for rookie of the year, Steve Nicol for coach of the year, Matt Reis for goalkeeper of the year, and no NE defenders among the defender of the year candidates.
But with that, we want to know, who are your picks for the 2009 MLS Awards? Vote here. (You’ll be directed away from the Revs’ blog

This list is bogus and self-serving for the league. Kevin and Darrius should have been given more consideration. The Revs front offiice did not help.

Hard to argue this case if we can’t get more fans to the games. Fans can backdoor names into these lists - we just don’t have the turnout to do this like Seatle did. If we had 35k coming to every game I’m sure we’d be seeing Kevin and possibly Darrius on the list.

I fail to see how Barnes and Alston not elected as ROTY candidates is the front office’s fault.
Barnes played every minute of every game, the only field player in the league to do so, in what was a pretty good defense (somewhere around 7th or 8th I think overall in the league). That statistic alone should give him the nod for ROTY.

IMHO - NO referee should be given an award unless it is prefaced by the word WORST and it is given to all of them.
Barnes should be rookie of the year - Gonzalez was good, but agree with Nathan 100% and you have to factor in Gonzalez was a first round pick, Barnes was a THIRD round pick.
Bruce Arena has to be coach of the year… as much as I despise him and his tactics. LA was heading down the toilet but he really turned it around (without Beckham I might add). Nicol did well with the players he had at his disposal, and I will give him that much, but you have to give credit where credit is due.
Reis to me did not stand out this year - despite his stats (besides it always comes down to GAA which is bad). He looked very shaky at times and that play against Rolfe was really bad.

As I recall, neither Alston nor Barnes were ever placed on the ballot.
Call it what you may. The error was never corrected and therefore no votes.
