Protected lists are in …
Written by revseye on November 23, 2009 – 7:52 pm -Major League Soccer has released the list of protected players for Wednesday’s Expansion Draft. The Philadelphia Union will select 10 players from the available players left unprotected by the 15 current MLS clubs. (Full draft rules are available here.)
In addition to the 11 players each club protected, non-graduated Generation adidas players are also automatically protected. League-wide, there is currently some confusion on which GAs were graduated and which weren’t (a corrected list is scheduled to be published later this evening), but Nico Colaluca has not been graduated and is protected, while both Kevin Alston and Amaechi Igwe have graduated the program.
A list of the Revs’ available and protected players follows, with a list of the protected players from the 14 other clubs. The link on each team’s name goes to its full roster.
If you were Philly management and head coach Peter Nowak, who would you be selecting on Wednesday?

WHAT THE HECK no jay or wells y would u just let them hang like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Because they could only protect 11 players and the players they protected take priority over Jay and especially Wells haha

I think Castro should have been on there. Could Jay be retiring??

We could only protect 11. To me, the last guys protected must have been Larentowicz - because of reports that he’s looking to land in Denmark, Twellman - because he hardly played all season, we have no idea whether he’ll ever play again, and his high salary, and Ralston - because he’s an oft-injured 36 yr old midfielder and also commands a high salary.
The fact that we didn’t protect Heaps may indicate that Nicol believes Igwe is ready to slot in at left back as part of our first XI. Also Jay is not getting any younger or faster. Having said that, I thought he had his best season for us and I love the guy to death. I’ll be holding my breath during the draft.

When you look at our unprotected list, it’s easy to see that there are a number of injured players who we didn’t see much of this year. This list isn’t really surprising, but I would hate, hate, hate to see Heaps or Castro leave, even though neither is getting younger. I also don’t want some of the younger guys to leave: Tierney, Videira and Igwe, but they could get more playing time somewhere else, sorry to say. Maybe Philly will poach from LA or the Fire instead!

Honestly seeing Well Thompson gone would probably help more than hurt us. He seems like a good guy and very athletic. He just seems to have no idea where to be when on the field, his touch is horrible, and excluding his one pretty great goal he has no sense of how to attack the goal.
Heaps would be good upfront if Twellman still hasn’t recovered or if the Revs don’t pick up a new forward. Which is desperately needed by the way.
Tierney, Videira, Albright, and Heaps are the ones I hope to see stay

1. Adam Cristman (For his aerial ability)
2. Pat Noonan (Rebuild the Rev Combo from 2007)
3. Ricardo Clark (Great Defensive Mid)
4. Dave Van Den Bergh
5. Christian Gomez
6. Jay Heaps (Best LB in MLS, can play anywhere)
7. Frankie Hejduk (Great RB that can get in the attack)
8. James Riley
9. Nick Garcia
10. Josh Saunders

I agree with Tom on his comments about Wells, I don’t think he doesn’t bring enough to the table.
If James Riley goes to the Union in the draft that would be three drafts in a row he’s been chosen. That has to be a league record.

i think wells brings a lot to the revs.. especially his speed (he is very fast) i would hate to see the revs loose him! .. and jay heaps ?? i am very surprised that he is not protected i hope he doesnt go . we need him.. nico colaluca should definately not be protected i think he should go
November 24th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Happy to see Igwe get moved somewhere where he will potentially get more play time. He has a lot of potential!
November 25th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Catherine… Nico Colaluca is a non-graduated GA player and is automatically protected as per the expansion draft rules. He doesn’t count towards one of our protection slots.
