Revolution Newsstand - December 3

Revolution NewsstandDominating today’s newsstand is yesterday’s announcement by Revolution legend Jay Heaps that he is retiring from professional soccer. It was a bittersweet day at Gillette Stadium, where teammates, coaches and staff celebrated Jay’s 11 years in the league while simultaneously mourning the loss of the club’s original ironman. While we agree with Taylor Twellman’s assessment that Jay “could’ve played until he was 40,” we are delighted that he is moving on to a position with Morgan Stanley which obviously ignites his passion the way soccer did. Additionally, Jay’s retirement is made easier with the knowledge that he plans to work with the Revolution front office in the near future to figure out a way to stay involved with the organization. He pretty much has to stick around, because otherwise, we’d miss him too much.

Eight of the nine stories in today’s newsstand focus on Jay, so here they are …

1. No regrets as Heaps steps away (Boston Globe)
2. Matt Reis out 4-6 months (Boston Herald)
3. Revolution star Jay Heaps retires (ESPN Boston)
4. Former Longmeadow High School soccer star Jay Heaps announces retirement from MLS’ New England Revolution (Springfield Republican)
5. Heaps announces retirement from MLS (ABC Action News)
6. Revs’ defender Heaps retires after 11 MLS seasons (Associated Press)
7. Revs legend Heaps hangs up cleats (MLSnet.com)
8. Official: Jay Heaps announces retirement (Goal.com)

Along with the announcement of Heaps’ retirement yesterday also came the news that goalkeeper Matt Reis has undergone surgery to repair a left shoulder injury. He was present at Heaps’ retirement press conference, although he was sporting quite the elaborate sling.

Finally, the Generation adidas team played the second game of its South African tour yesterday, falling to a Santos reserve team by a score of 2-1. Revolution defender Kevin Alston was once again unable to suit up after suffering a hamstring injury in the team’s first training session of the trip.

Jay, we will miss you. Would love to see you play until 40. Had a solid year last year and you were a major reason our backline stayed as sturdy as it did.

Yesterday was a sad day for this Revs fan…I really thought Jay could play another year or two: this past season was one of his best. He will be missed a lot.
The other sad note…Matt Reis is out 4-6 MONTHS, and we lost Brad last week to expansion Philly. Umm, now what?

Jay, thank you for everything you’ve given to the team, the fans, and the sport. I’m glad to hear that you will be staying on with the organization in some capacity, as, to quote the post here, we’d miss you too much otherwise. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

Also, best wishes to Matt for a healthy and speedy recovery.
