Revolution NewsstandThe big news in the realm of Major League Soccer this morning is the agreement between the league and the Players Union to continue to negotiate on a new collective bargaining agreement through February 12. The current CBA is set to expire on Sunday, Jan. 31, but this extension allows an extra two weeks for the sides to reach an agreement. What this means from the Revolution’s perspective is that preseason training will most definitely commence as scheduled, with the players set to report for entrance physicals on Monday (Feb. 1) and daily training sessions scheduled to kick off on Tuesday (Feb. 2).

In Revs-specific news, FoxSoccer.com’s Keith Costigan has the inside scoop with head coach Steve Nicol, as the pair discusses everything from New England’s 2009 season, to what the future holds for the club. Of course, there are even the obligatory Liverpool questions.

MLSnet.com has both East notes (Kyle McCarthy) and West notes (Jeff Carlisle), with McCarthy paying particular attention to the recent trade between the Revolution and Rapids, which brought Preston Burpo, Cory Gibbs, allocation money and a third-round selection in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft to New England in exchange for Jeff Larentowicz and Wells Thompson.

Meanwhile, McCarthy also uses his Friday Five on Goal.com to analyze the extension in CBA negotiations.

  3. Cooper Says:

So I suppose the question for Mike Burns is: Why did we protect Ralston instead of Knighton?

  4. Susan Says:

My question is why is everyone jumping ship–

    >>poor pay (seen Taylor and Shalrie have to fight for appropriate pay)
    >>the playing surface (look at all the injuries)
    >>coaching (I love Steve Nichol, but perhaps without Mariner???)
    >>lack of commitment from the Krafts (at times it feels like the Revs are a poor second cousin to the Pats)
    >>tired of being the “almost”, “could have been” team in MLS

whatever it is, it is disheartening to the fans to see so many changes to the team that has worked so well together and we have loved

  5. Helen Kessler Says:

Sad to see you go, Steve Ralston. You will be dearly missed! Thanks for all the great memories, and this Seattle based Rev’s fan wishes you and yours nothing but the very best! I know you will continue to do great things in whatever you decide to do! God Bless, Helen Kessler(Seattle,Wa.)

  6. Julie Says:

    Heaps..Larentowicz..Thompson..Albright..and Ralston!?!?!

    Revolution.. I’m done with you.

  7. luke Says:

    Should become usl team

  8. slughog Says:

Unbelievable. It’s unbelievable that we would let our capitan, 8-year Rev, MLS original, and team inspiration leave! Of course none of us yet know what exactly happened, but I find it equally unbelievable that Ralston would have asked for anything unreasonable from the Revs. I hate to admit it, but after all these years, I too am starting to lose faith. It’s so painful to see a team like Philly make all the right moves and our own team make nonsensical decisions over and over again. No stadium, no sponsor, no grass, no major signings, and now no capitain. Something needs to change, or you will lose even more support…..

  9. Julia Says:

This sucks. Like the economy. I have nothing to look forward to, this season.

  10. cammiev Says:

My heart is breaking…our captain is leaving, and why? Did he want to wait for a new CBA? Did the Revs lowball him? Is he afraid of the crappy turf?(which actually looks worse than the grass/dirt we used to have)? So, we’ve lost Ralston, Larentowicz, and Heaps. I realize Philly had loads of help with the draft and allocations (which we never seem to get), but guys, something’s got to change…I love this team too much to see it return to the bad old years before 2002.

  11. backseat Says:

You see the same strategy with the Pats. Go for young talent and cheap veterans before paying big bucks to renew a player that has established himself as one of the best in the league. It caught up with the Pats this year, and is going to probably catch up with the Revs this year too…. owell.

  12. Jimbo Says:

This team is done. We have no strikers (who really expects Taylor to return to soccer again?) no real midfielders and no heart.
Why protect Steve and lose Brad Knighton? Why have we not signed a super international? Why did we let Wells go and why was he in the doghouse? We can’t score and we have no excitement. So many questions and no answers except that the Kraft family really doesn’t care about this team. Gee..the Patriots Pro Shop….no Revs signs in the stadium,,,,,another origional season ticket holder done!

  13. Hope Says:

I’m not giving up on the Revs but very disappointed at all the losses this off season. I hope the gains bring their A game.
