RevGirl hopefulsThe New England Revolution held a tryout on Thursday afternoon in the Dana-Farber Field House with invited college players from all over the region. Saturday, it was the Rev Girls’ turn to open the Gillette Stadium doors to those interested in joining the squad that helps keep the fans vertical during home games and acts as ambassadors for the team away the field.

Coming into their second season, the Rev Girls have an important year of experience under their belts and are now intent on drafting the ladies they know can fill out their roster and play an integral role within the team.

The Rev Girls tryouts took place on the Club Level at Gillette Stadium. The sun’s midday rays soaked through the stadium façade and provided a naturally lit stage for the Rev Girl hopefuls taking part in the initial portion of the interview: the crowd involvement exercise- where the girls were encouraged to show their team spirit and display what they can do to get the Gillette Stadium fans on their feet.

After they caught their breath, the girls were brought into curtained offices for one-on-one interviews with the returning Rev Girls who know what to look for in a candidate.  (Photos and video after the jump)

Returning Rev Girl Jen went through the tryout process last year. “We have our inaugural year behind us, so we have a better idea of what to look for in the girls, what questions to ask.”

In order to create more buzz for the event, the Rev Girls used a grassroots marketing campaign to get the word out about the tryout. The girls used Twitter, Facebook and Craigslist and other websites to let people know about the event. The Rev Girls know if they get the right people interested, they can make a positive difference in the fan experience and in the game.

“We bring more excitement to the overall game experience that gives the Revs more of an identity- taking pictures with the fans, talking to everybody and letting them know they can communicate with us through defendthefort.net,” remarked returning Rev Girl Meaghan.

Those trying out came prepared to jump, cheer and show what they can do to bring the intensity at Revolution home games to another level. Rev Girl hopeful Cordy seemed comfortable with the interview procedures. “The process we go through is good because you get a sense of who the girls are and what they are looking for. They give you a good sense of what you are in for and how we would fit in.”

There were a few butterflies floating around on Saturday, but the veterans made sure everyone found their comfort zone to put forth their best effort. “I was a little nervous, but it wasn’t bad. The interviewers were very, very nice,” commented Anya who hopes to be included in the 2010 Rev Girls class.

The interview process was comprised of more than just a display of a few cheers, pirouettes and a light Q and A. All Rev Girls are expected to be fans of the sport of soccer and possess a working knowledge of the game. Sophomore Rev Girl Alyssa knows from experience that to be a successful Rev Girl, one must do her homework. “Knowing who the players are is important and the fans really relate to you better when you do actually know about soccer, so that is key.”
