U.S. vs. England: What’s Your Prediction?

Written by Jeff Lemieux on June 10, 2010 – 2:38 pm -

So it’s finally here. We’ve spent half a year anticipating Saturday afternoon’s epic clash between the U.S. and England ever since the World Cup Draw back in early December, and now we’re just 48 hours away from the teams finally stepping onto the field to settle the great debate once and for all.

Throughout the week I asked Revolution players their predictions for the U.S. vs. England match and got a variety of answers, including some which may surprise you. That video will be up tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime, I want to know what your predictions are for Saturday afternoon’s showdown. Feel free to get specific and describe your reasoning. Final score? Goal scorers? What’s the key to the U.S.’ success? How about England?

This is your chance to weigh in, so show us what you’ve got.

To kick things off here are some of my thoughts …

As an optimist and a diehard U.S. Soccer supporter, I certainly can’t predict the Americans to lose. As a realist, I can’t bring myself to predict a U.S. victory over an England side many believe has the goods to make a run at the title. So, I’m going with a 1-1 draw.

I think the U.S. takes the lead late in the first half - a scrappy, hardworking goal finished off by former Rev Clint Dempsey. They hold tight until the 75th minute or so, only to see Steven Gerrard level the score with a long-range bomb.

My key to the game is relatively obvious, but it’s a strong start for the U.S. Should the Americans go down early, I’m not sure I like their chances.

I’m with you, Jeff. I can’t predict us to lose, but it would require quite a bit of luck to come away with all three points. I see a draw as well.

    ENG-GER-LAND, ENG-GER-LAND, ENG-GER-LAAAAANNNNNNDDDDD!!!

An England loss would not surprise me one bit, but would make me flee the House of Blues in shame. Better practice my Bahstahn accent so I can pretend to be local.

    England 1:0 USA. Rooney 57′

    In my heart: 2-1 U.S.
    Would settle for: 1-1 draw.
    Realistically: 2-1 England.

This comes down to the big guns, Gerrard-Rooney and Lampard vs. Donovan and Dempsey. Also England is weak in the goalkeeping department. I see a USA draw 1-1 or an England victory 1-0 or 2-1. Let us just hope that the US defense can hold up against England’s flank attack.

UK all the way. BTW- did anyone read today’s Boston Globe Metro Section? Mayor Menino & Mr Kraft asking for Bostonians to cast their vote to host World Cup 2018/2022? Are you kidding me? Mr K can’t even find a sponsor for his team, did not include the NE Revs at the “World Series Red Sox Ceremonies” when they won the last time. Still don’t know why is a baseball world series when they don’t play against any other country other than Canada, and he does not ever include soccer in his plans. Mr K doesn’t deserve to host the World Cup until he gives soccer and his team the respect and acknowledgment it deserves. Soccer is one of the most recognized sports in the world- just in case he didn’t know that. Boo hoo to him. :(

  8. Cooper Says:

    England 3:0 America

  9. Rob Ukrop Says:

    @ Cooper
England has made tremendous progress during the last 60 years. They lost 0:1 to USA in 1950, but managed to get a draw in 2010. They definitely have a chance to win as soon as in 2070.

Hey Jeff: Congrats to you and I. ;) haha

Great effort from the boys earlier, proud of them all!
