Is a “World Cup Beard” a real thing? Can I do that?
Written by Jeff Lemieux on June 17, 2010 – 9:16 am -Fair warning from the start -Â if you don’t care about my shaving schedule, you can stop reading. That’s what this is about.
I’ve always enjoyed the whole concept of “playoff beards,” most notably used during the National Hockey League postseason but seen on occasion in other sports, as well (even MLS). For those who aren’t familiar, the idea is that once the playoffs start, players (and sometimes fans)Â don’t shave until their playoff run has come to an end. It’s supposed to provide some element of good luck, but I think it’s essentially a reason not to shave for a while, which I can understand.
I’m one who typically shaves every morning, but with the United States currently in the midst of its World Cup campaign, I thought if there’s ever a time I’m going to stop shaving for a bit, this might be it. Basically, my idea is to support the Americans’ run through the tournament with a “World Cup Beard” and not shave until the U.S. is eliminated from the tournament.
So my question for you is this … is that a real thing? Is a “World Cup Beard” even possible, or did I just make this up? Most importantly, is anybody else with me here? Can I get anyone else to sport a “World Cup Beard” with me?

for players, i feel you need to stick with what got you to the playoffs. if it is shaving your face (or head) everyday, keep it up!!
sorry for the lack of solidarity. i guess if it will make you feel better, i can stop shaving my legs until the final. ;-p

Ha! I’ll have no comment on that one … I appreciate the effort, however.

If it wasn’t before, the World Cup Beard is certainly a thing now! I got mine growing right now haha

It’s only a real thing if you make it so, Jeff.
