As I have the opportunity to do every week, I watched each of the Revolution’s training sessions from the sidelines from Tuesday – Friday and this week, it was clear the players had pushed their intensity to a new level following last week’s 5-0 loss to Real Salt Lake.
Throughout the course of the week, I spoke with head coach Steve Nicol as well as Matt Reis, Steve Ralston, Chris Tierney, Darrius Barnes, Kheli Dube, Seth Sinovic, Kevin Alston and Zack Schilawski. Topics ranged from what went wrong in Salt Lake City to what needs to be better against the league-leading LA Galaxy on Saturday night.
Below is one select quote from each, pulled from the conversations I had with them. Many of these quotes were/will be used in stories posted on revolutionsoccer.net, and I’ll be posting a complete list of all those stories (as well as all video from the week) later today after the preview is completed.
Head coach Steve Nicol
“At this point, we don’t care who we’re playing against. We need to sort ourselves out. We’re at home, so whoever they put in front of us, we need to get at them.”
“You try and get it sorted out here on the training field. We had a meeting and talked about it and hopefully we can turn the ship around. There’s still plenty of season left to go, but it takes a team effort.”
“Initially they said six weeks and it’s only been three and a half, but [the elbow] feels good. Obviously the one concern now is if I were to take a hard fall, is it going to withstand that? Is it healed enough? I would think (I’ll be ready) pretty soon. This weekend is a question mark – I doubt this weekend – but hopefully next weekend, for sure.”
“We’re determined. We’re fed up with results not going our way, so I think there was a little extra bite [this week] in training. I think the effort’s there and we’re doing things the right way, we’ve just got to be smart and hopefully results will start to turn around for us.”
“It’s going to be hard work. We can’t just think it’s going to flip on like a light switch and our ship is going to turn around. We have to take it one game at a time, take it one point at a time and just slowly chip away at it. Who better to get some momentum from than the best team in the league right now?”
“It’s got to be teammwork. Everybody’s got to work for each other. I think as soon as everybody works for each other, then we’re going to start earning points. It’s tough coming from losses like that. We just need to start winnng, and it’s going to take a team effort to do that.”
“We know we’re capable. We know we’ve got the talent here. We just have to put it together, and we haven’t been doing that so far. We’ve got to stop saying there’s plenty of games left and all that stuff – we’re halfway through (the season), we’ve got to start putting points on the board and get back in this playoff race.”
“[The intensity] picked up on all fronts. We had a meeting and we talked about things we need to do better. One of the main things is we need to work harder in practice. We need to come with more intensity, a more competitive mentality, so it definitely picked up.”
“I think everyone’s trying to fight back a little bit. It’s a matter of pride at this point. Everyone’s got to make sure – at the very least – that we’re fighting to get a win here this weekend.”
