New England Revolution

Members of the Revolution’s communications and digital departments are trying something new for tonight’s game, which will be played at the same time as Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Inspired by our newest intern, who also assists the Bruins during home games, we are test-driving some new game day traditions here at Gillette Stadium.

Tradition #1: Business attire

While communications intern Brian Smith stuck with his purple palette – a superstition that has proved successful in his work with the B’s – Staff Writer & Online Host Jeff Lemieux has selected an entirely black and gold ensemble. Notorious track suit-wearer, Digital Content Assistant Jeff Wroblewski, also turned his look up a notch, donning a button-down and tie.

Tradition #2: Red velvet cupcakes

One four-part lunchtime mission later, Director of Communications Lizz Summers returned with red velvet cupcakes – a tried and true pregame media dessert option at Bruins games, we’re told by Brian. Given that we already started the day with Munchkins, I’m personally hoping that this one doesn’t stick for more than a few games. 2 lbs. x 9 remaining home games…

I know a couple busloads of Revolution fans will be heading down I-95 tomorrow en route to Red Bull Arena for Friday night’s nationally-televised meeting with the rival New York Red Bulls … and that’s exactly what the Revs are doing right now. Players and staff departed Gillette Stadium late this morning and should be arriving in NYC/New Jersey sometime this afternoon.

In speaking with the players earlier this week, I can tell you they’re all looking forward to the support at RBA. For those who won’t be making the trip, FOX Soccer will televise the game as part of its “Soccer Night in America” coverage beginning with a pregame show at 8 p.m. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. and the match will be followed by a 30-minute postgame show.

Anyone making the trip to RBA tomorrow? If so, let us know!

… don’t go to Texas.

If you’ve followed any of our preview coverage throughout the week here on revolutionsoccer.net, you know by now that temperatures in the Dallas area are expected to top out in the upper 90s every day for the next week or so. The Revs touched down in the Lone Star State late this afternoon and I can confirm that it’s pretty warm … approximately 93 degrees as we head from the airport to the hotel at 4 p.m. CT.

Two questions lingered through Memorial Day weekend in the aftermath of the Revolution’s 1-0 loss to the LA Galaxy.

First, would Shalrie Joseph accept Grenada’s call to join his homeland for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup or would he remain with the Revs as they battle for position in the crowded Eastern Conference? Second, what was the extent of Benny Feilhaber’s right ankle injury?

The answer to the first question will be well-received in New England, as the Revolution’s captain chose to remain with his club and declined Grenada’s invitation to join its Gold Cup roster. Joseph was at Gillette Stadium for training on Tuesday morning and will be available for selection when the Revs travel to visit FC Dallas on Saturday night. We plan on speaking with Joseph about his decision on Wednesday, so check out revolutionsoccer.net for another update tomorrow afternoon.

As for Feilhaber, the update at this point is that there isn’t too much to update. On Tuesday, Feilhaber was listed on the Revolution’s injury report as OUT with a sprained right ankle, but right now there is no timetable for his return nor has a decision been made about his ability to join the U.S. National Team for the Gold Cup. He’ll continue to be evaluated by the medical staff and we’ll keep you updated as further updates become available.

A funny thing happened on the way to shoot Revolution Soccer Gameday this morning here in Kansas City.

Tornadoes touched down in the area.

Just as I was about to head out and shoot our usual game day feature with Digital Content Assistant (and Far Post Podcast contributor) Jeff Wroblewski, the skies opened up and the sirens began to sound throughout the city as an official tornado warning was declared. From what I understand, a tornado actually touched down in Overland Park, Kan., the site of tonight’s U.S. Open Cup play-in match against Sporting Kansas City.

As you may have saw last week, Slyde was having a bit of an identity crisis. Looks like he’s on his way back from the depths of despair! I know we’ve complained quite a bit about the lousy weather we’ve had in New England this spring, but I think we can all agree it’s nothing compared to the devastating storms they’re currently experiencing in the middle of the country. In addition to the tornado which recently tore through Joplin, Mo., severe weather has plagued the Midwest for days and will continue to do so as we progress throughout the week.

Of course, the Revs are headed that direction this afternoon as we depart for Kansas City and a U.S. Open Cup play-in match against Sporting KC, which will take place on Wednesday night at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex. Fans can watch the game beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET via live streaming video here on revolutionsoccer.net with commentary from Sporting’s Callum Williams and Revs play-by-play man Brad Feldman.

IS IT A LETDOWN TO PLAY IN THE U.S. AFTER PLAYING IN EUROPE?

Definitely not. I’m really happy to be back in the States and playing MLS. Since I first made the decision to go to Europe to play, MLS has grown into an outstanding, competitive league.

It’s been almost three weeks since the Revs were last on the road, but today the bags are packed once again as the team takes off for the West Coast to prepare for a Saturday night meeting with the San Jose Earthquakes. A brief two-game home-stand to start the month of May was successful in many respects – particularly on the defensive side of the ball – as the Revs registered back-to-back shutouts in a 0-0 draw with the Colorado Rapids and a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. Now it’s time to continue racking up points away from home.
